Waxing before and aftercare

We want to help make your skin feel soft, smooth and hair free. But how can you help your wax last and be more comfortable? Read our waxing before and after care tips to learn how to prepare the waxing area for a more pleasant experience and how to care for it after your appointment.

WAXING BEFORE CARE

Preparing for a wax treatment is important to help make the wax last longer and maybe even a little less painful. Follow these steps:

  • Remember to book your wax appointment two days before a special event to allow the follicles enough time to close and the skin to calm down
  • Make sure that you leave at least 0.5cm of hair length, so that the hair can be easily removed. First time waxers should have hair growth of about 1.5cm.
  • Exfoliate the waxing area 24-48 hours before your appointment to make your skin soft and smoother and prevent ingrown hairs
  • Bath or shower on the day of your appointment to open up follicles, allowing for easier hair removal
  • Wear loose fitting clothing to your wax appointment
  • Do not apply deodorant, make-up, lotions, soaps, powders, perfumes, self-tanning or any other beauty products to the area that will be waxed
  • Some clients choose to take a Tylenol or Advil 30 minutes before their appointment if they're very sensitive to the pain
  • It's always best to ask your doctor if you have any questions. Skip the wax if you are on oral acne medication such as Accutane or have used it in the past 6 months. If you use prescribed creams such as Differin, Retin-A or any Retinoids, the surrounding area cannot be waxed within 7 days of product application. Waxing on these medications can cause your skin to lift.
  • Please let us know of any special circumstances such as if this is your first-time waxing, if you’re pregnant, if it’s that time of the month, or if you’ve ever had any negative reactions to waxing

During your waxing appointment, we want you to let us know what you want done and then take a deep breath and relax!

WAXING AFTERCARE

After your waxing service, you may expect the area to be red, some may experience blood spots due to thicker, courser hair and the area may feel tender and tingle. These symptoms should subside over the next 24 - 48 hours. If you experience persistent redness or irritation, or if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

For the first 24 hours after a waxing service, follow these guidelines for more comfort:

  • No touching or scratching the waxed area
  • No exfoliating the waxed area
  • No hot showers--try to only take cool or lukewarm showers and avoid washing or scrubbing the area
  • No exercise, sauna’s, stream rooms, swimming or anything else that can add perspiration and friction to the waxed area because sweat can infect open follicles and heat can irritate the waxed area
  • No sunbathing, sunbeds or any sunlight and UV exposure
  • No application of any products to the waxed area such as deodorants, make-up, lotions, soaps, powders, perfumes, self-tanning products etc
  • No tight fitted clothing that may cause friction

To soothe and calm your skin, apply a rich moisturizer, such as our favorite Jurlique Calendula Redness Rescue Soothing Cream ($38) or Jurlique Balancing Day Care Cream ($44) daily. This will prevent ingrown hairs and ensure that your next wax is easier and a little less painful. Tea tree oil can be applied to the area for its anti-bacterial properties.

It is important to keep the area clean and dry for 48 hours after your appointment.

For the next two to ten days after your wax appointment, gently exfoliate 2-3 times a week with a body scrub to help prevent ingrown hairs. Your skin will close over the follicles and new hair may get trapped causing ingrown hairs. Too much exfoliation can be harmful so be sure to exfoliate gently.

Your hair will become noticeably softer, finer, and over time sparser with consistent waxing. We recommend waxing treatments every 4-6 weeks for best results. At least 3-4 weeks of hair growth are needed before waxing. Please let us know if you have any questions!
